CRNA Program Summary

Are you concerned that UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia won’t give you the specific experiences or training you need to be a successful CRNA? Learn what standards CRNA Programs must meet in order to be accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia (COA).

This CRNA program (as well as all others that are accredited by the COA) prepares you to take the CCNA certification exam at the conclusion of the program, allowing you to become a CRNA.

At this an integrated CRNA school, you’ll begin clinical experience in your second semester. Your coursework will gradually diminish throughout the program as your clinical hours increase. The program culminates in a research thesis.

There are five clinical affiliate sites: Four in Pennsylvania (Erie, Punxsutawney, Russell, and one in Dunkirk, New York.

CRNA Program Requirements

Required Bachelor Degree
An earned bachelor’s degree with a major in nursing.

RN:
A current RN license

Critical Care:
Must have a minimum two years recent, full-time critical care experience prior to interviews. The applicant’s critical care experience must demonstrate management of the acutely ill patient with invasive hemodynamic monitoring, ventilatory care, and pharmacologic intervention.

Acceptable critical care experience includes:

  • CTICU (Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit) preferred
  • SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) preferred
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit)
  • Neonatal ICU
  • PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) is acceptable if obtained in a unit where open heart, cardiothoracic, cardiovascular, or neuro patients recover before admission to a SICU
  • Emergency Department if obtained in a large trauma center

GPA:
A minimum 3.0 on the last 60 units of undergraduate nursing studies, and science courses.

Minimum GRE scores:
Minimum GRE with a competitive score

Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • *CCRN

*Recommended, not required

Course Prerequisites – with a grade of B or better:

  • Intro to Statistics course
  • Undergraduate nursing research course
