Guiding your CRNA journey with data, community, and mentorship

ICU experience is the requirement most applicants worry about. Here is how many years accepted applicants had, which units and hospitals they came from, and why the quality of your experience matters more than the time you put in.
See the 2026 DataMost schools require at least one year of recent adult critical care experience. Accepted applicants in 2026 had a median of 3.0 years (middle 50%: 2 to 5 years), and 88% worked at level I or II trauma centers. CVICU/CTICU, MICU and SICU were the most common units.
ICU experience is one of 11 admission requirements. For the full list, see the CRNA school requirements checklist.
One year is the minimum at most programs, but most accepted applicants had more. The sweet spot is about 3 years. With much more, you must show that you are still teachable.
Data: Collected by Greg Olyansky, CRNA, 2026 SRNA acceptance dataset (317 responses, including 227 accepted applicants), the only public dataset of accepted CRNA applicants we know of. Responses are self-reported, so treat them as a snapshot, not a guarantee. Bars are scaled to the largest value in each table.
| ICU years | Accepted applicants | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | 1 of 227 (<1%) | |
| 1 to 2 years | 32 of 227 (14%) | |
| 2 to 3 years | 53 of 227 (23%) | |
| 3+ years (majority) | 141 of 227 (62%) |
Aim for more than one year in a large ICU, ideally at a level I or II trauma center. Cardiovascular ICU was the most common background among accepted applicants. As a student you will care for patients from neonates to 100-year-olds, so breadth matters.

Community hospital applicants had a lower median overall GPA but more ICU time. That group is small (n=13), so read it as a pattern, not a rule.
This describes who is in CRNA school today. It does not prove that any one unit or hospital causes acceptance.

Most schools require at least one year of recent adult critical care experience. Accepted applicants in 2026 had a median of 3.0 years, with the middle 50% between 2 and 5 years.
Adult ICU experience at a large, high-acuity hospital. Among 227 accepted applicants in 2026, 88% came from level I or II trauma centers, and CVICU/CTICU (44%), MICU (36%) and SICU (24%) were the most common units.
Most programs require adult ICU experience. PICU, NICU and level I trauma ER experience are strong supporting experience, but only some programs accept them toward the core requirement, so check each program before you apply.
Not on its own. In the 2026 data, applicants who were not selected had a higher median ICU tenure (4.5 years) than accepted applicants (3.0 years). Acuity, case complexity and breadth matter more than time served.
