Academic and Clinical Experience

CRNA Training

The DNP, Nurse Anesthesia Program will give you additional knowledge and clinical experiences starting during the second semester of your first year.

You will build a professional portfolio which will include written case studies of clinical experiences that have significance for nurse anesthesia practice. Average number of cases for the first cohort 2020: 1,086. Average clinical hours: 2,729.

CRNA Program Requirements

Bachelor’s degree with a Nursing major from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLNAC, now the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) or the Commission on College Nursing Education

RN:
Current, unencumbered Wisconsin license to practice as a registered nurse

Critical Care:
A minimum of one year of current full-time critical care, but prefer 2 years. Preferred critical care units include surgical intensive care, cardiothoracic intensive care, coronary intensive care, medical intensive care, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care.

They will consider the following on an individual basis:

  • Telemetry
  • Cardiac Cath Lab
  • Operating room
  • PACU or RR
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Emergency Department

Those with experience in the areas listed above must demonstrate confidence with managing unstable patients, invasive monitoring, ventilators, and critical care pharmacology.

GPA:
Cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. They will consider a GPA of 2.70-2.99 (on a 4.0 scale) under a probationary status.

Courses:

  • Anatomy/Physiology – 8 credits
  • Inorganic and Organic Chemistry – 8 credits
  • Microbiology – 3-4 credits
  • Pharmacology – 3-4 credits
  • A statistics course that includes both descriptive and be at least 3 credits.

Minimum GRE scores: 
Only required for applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.7-2.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • CCRN (preferred but not required)

Shadow Experience
You must submit a reference form from a CRNA you followed in job shadowing.
