CRNA Program Summary

Are you concerned that St Joseph Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia won’t give you the specific experiences or training you need to be a successful CRNA? Learn what standards CRNA Programs must meet in order to be accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia (COA).

This CRNA program (as well as all others that are accredited by the COA) prepares you to take the CCNA certification exam at the conclusion of the program, allowing you to become a CRNA.

Program Structure
The program spans 36 months, with on-campus didactic sessions in the first year. In your second & third years, you’ll have a mix of didactic and clinical education, including advanced anesthesia training, clinical practice, and research.

Clinical Sites
Your clinical experience will take place at St Joseph Hospital as well as five affiliate site, three of which are in RI, two in MA.

Clinical Experiences
You will learn a wide range of anesthesia, including Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Thoracic, Neuro, Cardiovascular, Regional and general anesthetics.

CRNA Program Requirements

Required Bachelor Degree
You need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher.

RN
Have proof of current licensure as a registered nurse. Once accepted, you’ll need an RN license in Rhode Island Massachusetts.

Critical Care
Have a minimum of one year of experience in an acute care setting with the opportunity to develop independent decision-making skills and interpret advanced monitoring techniques.

GPA
A preferred science GPA of 3.0 in science courses.

GRE Scores
You no longer need to take the GRE to be accepted to the nurse anesthesia program. This is not a requirement.

Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Course Prerequisite (within the last 10 years)

  • 2 Chemistry courses (CHEM 105, CHEM 106) with a minimum grade of C
  • Statistics (required by Rhode Island College) with a minimum grade of C

Vacation Time
“We give our students 25 days of personal time off during the clinical portion of the program.  We are a front loaded program now in partnership with Rhode Island remaining courses.  Yes, we still currently observe 10 holidays.”

What is my time commitment?
“Students are required to be present Monday through Friday from 6:30 am until dismissal by their immediate supervisor. Dismissal  time vary according to clinical and didactic requirements. The time commitment of no more than 64 hours per week includes time spent in class and all clinical hours.”

Can I work as an RN while I’m in the program?
“Students are encouraged to enter school with adequate financial resources due to the rigorous time commitment.”
