Rutgers CRNA Program, formerly known as UMDNJ School of Nursing, admitted its first Nurse Anesthesia class in 2004. The first cohort of anesthesia students in the DNP curriculum was in May 2015.

Are you concerned that Rutgers CRNA Program won’t give you the specific experiences or training you need to be a successful CRNA? Learn what standards CRNA Programs must meet in order to be accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia (COA).
This CRNA program (as well as all others that are accredited by the COA) prepares you to take the CCNA certification exam at the conclusion of the program, allowing you to become a CRNA.
“36-month curriculum is divided into two phases: didactic (first 12 months) and clinical specialty (final 24 months).
Didactic Phase – The curriculum begins with a didactic phase during which many of the DNP core and introduction to, the specialized curriculum that follows. There are eleven courses (32 credits) in the didactic phase that will be available in either distance format or in an executive model that combines web-based learning with face-to-face instruction.
Anesthesia Clinical Specialty Phase – The final 24 months of study include 39 credits of didactic course work and workshops are held on the RBHS campus in Newark NJ.
A challenging clinical practicum consisting of a minimum of 2500 hours is offered at twenty premiere clinical affiliates in Northern New Jersey and emergent procedures.

CRNA Program Requirements
Required Bachelor Degree
Baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program.
RN:
You must submit a valid RN license with your application from ANY state. You will be required to obtain both an NJ & NY RN License before matriculation, should you be admitted.
Critical Care:
A minimum of one complete year of full time, recent experience as a Registered Professional Nurse in a critical care setting with demonstrated proficiency in managing critically ill patients, mechanical ventilation, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive IV infusions and aggressive fluid management.
Preferred areas of critical care experience include:
- Surgical ICU
- Cardio Thoracic ICU
- Neurosurgical ICU
- Burn ICU
- Pediatric ICU
- Medical ICU
They may consider:
- Selected PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), if care is comparable to other ICUs.
They do NOT accept:
- ER (Emergency Room)
- OR (Operating Room)
- Neonatal ICU
Best advice? When working in your critical care unit, ask questions and pharmacology will be assessed during the interview process.
GPA:
3.2 GPA where A=4.0. Under no circumstances, will they consider a candidate with less than a 3.0 GPA.
Grades earned in science courses are scrutinized closely.
GPA is a very big factor in the selection process.
Minimum GRE scores:
GRE is NOT required.
International Students:
Students who are not graduates of a College or University in the United States must provide an official review of their transcript by WES or CGFNS and results of IELTS.
For all applicants who are not graduates of a US college or university:
- The minimum Paper based TOEFL score is 550.
- The minimum Computer based TOEFL score is 213
- The minimum IBT-internet based TOEFL (Writing 22, Speaking 23, Reading 21, Listening 17)
Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Life Support)
- CCRN – examination scores will be requested of candidates invited for an interview.
Certificates must be submitted with the application.
