Academic and Clinical Experience Are you concerned that the Evanston Northwestern Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program won’t give you the specific experiences or training you need to be a successful CRNA? This CRNA program (as well as all others that are accredited by the COA) prepares you to take the CCNA certification exam at the conclusion of the program, allowing you to become a CRNA.
Year I: The first twelve months are devoted to core nursing courses (12 qtr hours), applied science courses (18 qtr hours), advanced physical assessment (2 qtr hrs). and pharmacology (4 qtr hrs). There is no clinical residency in the first year.
Year 2: The second twelve months includes 20 quarter hours in core anesthesia courses: principles of anesthesia practice, (8 qtr hrs), pathophysiology (6 qtr hrs), anesthetic pharmacology (6 qtr hrs), and the three clinical practicums.
Year 3: The final twelve months inlcude 8 quarter hours in graduate nursing research, 4 quarter hours in advanced principles of anesthesia, and four clinical practicums.
Academic coursework is woven throughout the 21 month clinical residency and includes advanced principles of practice, research, seminar presentations, clinical conferences, and professional meetings.
Clinical residency consists of seven practicums where you will work under the instruction/supervision of a CRNA or anesthesiologist. As you gain more competence, you’ll be given more responsibility.
You’ll administer general and regional anesthesia to all patient populations and for all surgical and diagnostic procedures including but not limited to general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, transplant, thoracic, open heart, neurosurgery, trauma and office based anesthesia.
You’ll administer approximately 950 anesthetics during your residency.

CRNA Program Requirements
BSN BSN is preferred. If you have a non-nursing degree, you’ll need to complete three additional undergraduate courses at DePaul.
RN: You need to be eligible for an RN license in the state of Illinois.
Critical Care: Minimum of one year nursing experience in critical care, two years preferred.

GPA: 3.0 or better
Minimum GRE scores: A compiled score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections and a 4.0 on the written analytical section are desirable.
TOELF: Test of Foreign Language (TOEFL) may be required for applicants who speak English as a second language.

Shadow day with a CRNA is strongly recommended.
CRNA Educational Requirements
Graduate level Statistics is recommended. May be taken during the first year of the program.
Organic Chemistry (or Biochemistry) must be taken within the last five years.
Accredited CRNA Programs are reviewed regularly. Evanston Northwestern Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia’s was last reviewed 10/2005. It was given the maximum of 10 years accreditation and will be reviewed again 10/2015. This shows that the program is very stable.

What does the average student registered nurse anesthetist look like? The average SRNA is 32 years old. Seventy five percent are female, 52% are married, 33% have children, 29% are out of state, and 4% are in the Army Reserves. Eighty-five percent are degree seeking with concurrent enrollment at DePaul University.
How many hours should I expect to be engaged in the program each week? The program is designed for full time study. During clinical residency (the last two years), the time committee to residency, lectures, and personal study averages 56 hrs a week.
Can I work as an RN while I’m in the program? There is no clinical residency during the first year and SRNA’s usually work 20-40hrs.
During clinical residency (year 2-3), NATs in good academic standing are allowed to work a maximum of 16 hours/week, however, very few SRNA’s are able to work on a regular basis.
