How to use the 2011 CRNA school rankings
Nurse Anesthetist Programs that are ranked in the top 20 will likely offer you a better education than those in the mid 50s, but if you’re choosing between a school that’s ranked 3rd vs. 11th, I wouldn’t let rank be the deciding factor.
Even though these rankings are not based on any empirical evidence, they do help answer the question I get asked more often than any other, which is, “which is the best CRNA School in the US?”
Which are the TOP CRNA SCHOOLS in the US?
It really depends on what you’re looking for.
Program A may have a high ranking and offer great clinical experience, but they may also require you to travel across state (or even across country) to get that experience. That’s fine if you’re single, but if the extra travel puts a strain on your family and causes you to perform poorly in class or clinical, then it really isn’t the best CRNA School for you.
However, if CRNA program B is close to home, doesn’t require much travel and would give you more time to complete your assignments and be with your family, then it’s a better choice for you, even if it is ranked in the 50s or 60s.
Will attending a poorly ranked CRNA school keep me from getting hired?
Another question I get asked a lot is about getting hired. Many students are concerned that if they go to a poorly ranked CRNA Program, they’ll have trouble getting a job.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, the job market for CRNAs is GREAT for the next 20+ years. Yes, there is still a nursing shortage. There will be as long as there are baby boomers entering retirement.
Secondly, there are currently not enough nurse anesthetist schools to keep up with the high demand for CRNAs. Several new CRNA schools are popping up each year just to compensate for the shortage.
Besides, the CCNA exam required to become a CRNA is much like the NCLEX. Once you pass it, you’re set! Your certification gets you the job, not your diploma.
