University of Alabama at Birmingham CRNA School Review

(Birmingham, AL)

Talk about a CRNA school to avoid.

This "school" does little more than commit highway robbery. From the moment you enter, they discriminate against minority students (it's Alabama after all), dismiss students for little or no reason, and threaten legal action against anyone who seeks redress of grievances.

Avoid this program at all costs.

Bait and switch

This program recently moved to the UAB School of Nursing and lost the real science "edge" to its curriculum (huge bummer).

UAB toots its horn really well to those who work and school here, but most employees/students have never worked in other places (outside of Alabama) to have the exposure to know better! UAB is good, average, acceptable... but not great by any means. I wish I had known that before I moved here for its program! (and no, I am not disgruntled or performing poorly - this is an honest opinion that will hopefully help someone else someday)

Unfortunately, the program also doubled in price when it moved from the School of Health Sciences. I would recommend looking at the U of Tenn Chattanooga program if seeking something in this region of the country. They do clinical at the NMMC in Tupelo, MS which is impressive in so many ways that UAB is not, and they do well to relate the underlying science to CRNA practice. I envy my counterparts who chose that school instead!

Total BS about discrimination at UAB. The program doesn't become one of the most respected Nurse Anesthesia programs in the Country by discrimination. Would be willing to bet the race baiter didn't even go to school at UAB. Probably sour grapes or Affirmative Action candidate that failed to be accepted. When I attended anesthesia school at UAB, the ratio was 44 applicants per position. I was turned down by two other schools but instead of ******** [complaining] about it, I was persistent until I was accepted.

Worked in many places last 15 years. Always felt well prepared by comparison and proud of my education.

I am a graduate of the UAB program and am very pleased with the education I received there. Working in other states with other school's graduate students, I can honestly say UAB is tops. As for discrimination, try another angle. As a white female I was probably discriminated against more than you...

Not associated with UAB CRNA program, but am a physician at UAB. Have never experienced, witnessed, or heard mention of discrimination of any sort at UAB hospital in my 4 years here.

Suggest to Anonymous to stop looking for ways to cry foul over race and rather put that much or more effort in actually excelling in your studies and clinically duties. Highly doubt program is looking to fail their "token" minorities.

I could not agree more with the previous post. Of course, there's the usual 'token' minorities in their class roster. For the most part, the school is discriminatory.

Regardless if the school is in the South, it stands to reason that what's expected of a graduate school (especially from the professors) is a non-biased, non-discriminatory attitude.

The school certainly reflects this 'small-minded' mentality.
