Call me doctor, please!

by Lee
(Houston, TX USA)

Whilst some may feel it is deceptive to call yourself doctor when you are a DNP, the fact is that you will be treated with more respect by patients and families alike if you are seen as a "doctor" administering anesthesia vs a nurse administering anesthesia. It all boils down to perception, doctors are trusted more by patients than nurses are.

Yes, a Doctor!
by: Anonymous

MD does not equal 'Doctor'. There is no reason for a nurse to have to humble themself just to save MDs' egos. If a nurse earns a doctorate they have every right to call themselves a doctor. The principal at my daughter's elementary school has all the kids call him 'Doctor Gorman'. Are you going to accuse him of being misleading? You might as well - do you think a kindergardner knows the difference between a Doctor as a principal and a Doctor as a MD?

MD's egos are out of control. A MD is only one kind of doctor, and they do not have the word 'doctor' copyrighted. The word indicates an academic achievement that can be had in many different fields. I will not cheapen my achievements because of MD's compulsion to keep nurses 'in thier place'.

that is called deception. NOT cool, many patients and families will be upset if you present yourself as an MD instead of a CRNA with a few extra research classes done on a computer
